A down on his luck gambler (Denholm Elliot) tries to cash in his signet ring with a sinister pawn broker (Donald Pleasence). The pawn broker offers the gambler a most unusual deal - a tenner for the ring or, if he prefers to take one last gamble, a handful of magic beans. After some deliberation, the gambler takes the beans.
When he gets home, he is overcome by the stupidity of his actions and throws the beans violently out into the garden, then drinks himself to sleep.
The next morning, he is astounded to find an enormous beanstalk outside his window. He runs out into the garden, and begins to climb, higher and higher, upwards, ever upwards...
In reality, however, the strain has driven him mad and he is actually climbing the trellis up the side of his neighbour's garage, naked apart from a pair of black socks. He is swiftly detained under the Mental Health Act, and is taken away, but not before he has laid some 'golden eggs' on the drive. The End.
